I went to the Pocono Mountains this weekend with the women from Apostles Church. There was 90 something of us who went and it was awesome.
It was a bit chilly, windy and rainy and at one point it started to snow! I heard there was a snowman in front of one of the cabins so it must have snowed right before we got there too. I didn’t bring enough layers and I don’t think I was the only one. But we were brave, and about 15 of us went on a hike on Saturday. It was soooo slippery. We were walking on wet leaves and wooden planks and my Frye boots were sliding and I feared for my life. I was SO relieved when we saw the road again. One of my new friends was like, “I take it this isn’t a typical vacation for you, Amanda.” Haha, no! I love camping and exploring! I just don’t like being scared for my life! I was concentrating so hard on not tripping over branches or slipping on something that I didn’t speak to anyone for at least 20 minutes at one point. But it was pretty.
It was nice to get away and just be able to think about life for awhile. The best part was just getting to know other people and hearing their stories. You can never have too many friends and it’s great to meet people you can learn from. Oh, and I also learned how to play poker! I’ve played once before, but now I can probably school you. Ok, maybe not, but I’ll put up a fight.
And of course I have to make a comment on the food. Camp food. It wasn’t too bad! I had a lot of coffee and by coffee I mean half coffee and half hot chocolates. I fear I may be going to the other side – the coffee drinking side. Actually, it’s pretty obvious I’m already there because I make at least three of them. Coffee addiction, here we come. But I still need me some chocolate.
Um, there was definitely enough desserts. We had cakes and candies. And more cakes. With so much frosting. It was a problem.
The last night we made pretzels, or decorated them really. I went with vanilla frosting with cinnamon sugar, but there was also chocolate frosting or cheese, which I heard was pretty fab. But I didn’t need to go there.
And on the last night we had a camp fire. Julianne is an opera singer (for realz) and she sang Ava Maria for us and it was amazing. I hope I get to see her when she’s on a stage one day, that would be so sweet.
Wow, I just posted a lot of pictures. But I am very thankful for the weekend.
Also, the Poconos are not that far away from the city. I hope to go there again, we drove by some gorgeous lakes and mountains on our way.
I’m glad you had fun! I did miss hearing from you during the weekend though :(
The trees are sooo pretty! I still think it looks a bit like Michigan but you can def see a difference.
The pretzels sound yummy too! I am sooo glad you’re becoming a coffee drinker! I used to do a little bit of chocolate in my coffee at first too, but it will fade eventually, I promise!
Haha… I don’t want to be a coffee drinker!!!!
Sounds like an awesome weekend, and it was a good post! Pictures are good. We love the pictures. Keep posting pictures! The leaves are just starting to turn here too!
The campers at play looks like they are falling in to the maw of some giant monster mouth… teeth on the left… :-)
Sounds like you need a good pair of hiking boots! Vasque is my favorite, but only if you’re going to do a lot of hiking. I’m glad you have a place to get away from it all so near the city… hustle and bustle vs. quiet contemplation. Hope you feel better for having gone. :-)
I know, I thought that sign was hilarious! Hmm… I’ll have to check out those boots, thanks! :)
your post makes me really REALLY regret that i never went camping during my time at college in western massachusetts! i think i’ll be a revolutionary and give it a try in around istanbul. (ps: ave maria is a beautiful song.)

Haha, yes, try it and let me know how it goes!
Camping is so much fun, even in cabins! And Ava Maria is an amazing song. Totally breath-taking.
