Another barbecue picture! This is from Fette Sau‘s table at the Village Voice Choice Eats 2010 last night. This means we’re taking a break from our regular programming, as I have some more City Mitten: Naples, Florida coming your way, but I like to be relevant and relevant is the tasting fest I went to last night.

First, you should know that it took place at the 69th Armory on Lexington and I was waiting in line on Park. The line went around the ENTIRE block. Insanity.

Inside it was pretty tolerable. Sure, there was some pushing and shoving at some of the more popular stations but there were also tables and tables of wine and beer so nobody was freaking out. Really this was a pretty good deal. We got our tickets early (over a month ago) and they were $35 and there was enough food to never be hungry again and enough to drink to never be thirsty again either. The sample sizes are actually pretty big, so if you’re not careful you can get full fast and not be able to try very much.

Here are some of my faves:

First sandwich: Cheeky Sandwiches. Sweet potato spread, beets, some sort of fried cheese and arugala. When we got in line for that one, the tattooed man serving sandwiches was like, “These are only vegetarian!” and I said, “Well, let’s have ’em then!” and the guy next to me smiled real big at me. I like happy people.

Then was Purple Yam sandwich. Apparently I really like sandwiches. But this one was also good.

Then we have a dessert from No. 7 which actually was not my favorite, but it sure was pretty.

Cullen skink soup from Highlands. That was pretty delish.

More pulled pork or something with cole slaw from Juliette, which is a place my friend Lucy really recommends. She says it’s “precious” and that’s the word she uses when she describes restaurants she really likes so I should probably go. Now THAT is what a sample size should be: the size of a spoon, not an entire plate.

And that last pic is shrimp sandwich from Luke’s Lobsta! Told you I love sammies.

Besides that, like I said there were lots and lots of people and some places ran out of food by 7:30 (It started at 5:30 for VIP and then 6:30 for us regulars). Porchetta ran out as soon as we were walking up to them and I didn’t get to try anything from Fatty Crab. Luke’s Lobster was crazy efficient and their Twitter says they gave out 900 mini shrimp rolls. Dang!

Well, that was fun. And now I’m really looking forward to all the food fests that come around in NYC in the summer! :)

Happy New Year from me and Miss Abby V.! She came back with me from Detroit for New Year’s and our night turned out pretty okay. We spent the whole day yesterday shopping and then made our way to a blackjack party in Brooklyn to ring in the New Year but there was really no blackjack at all. There was one table. It was strange. New Years is always so hit or miss.

We left that party shortly and went to an apartment in the East Village.

At that party we took pictures in the hallway and hung out on the stairs:

Ok, so that’s not all we did, but that’s the only things I have pictures of! It was an interesting evening, to say the least. I had a good time, though. I’m glad that it turned out the way it did, even though it ended up nothing like what we had planned, and I’m even more glad that today I’ll be giving my feet a nice break. Happy 2010, y’all!
