Would you like a paaaaancaaaaaaake? I love pancakes, really.

So a couple weekends ago my friend Melissa had a rental car and she suggested we go somewhere we’d have to drive to for brunch. So of course, I went to the Diners, Drive-ins and Dives page on the Food Network website. Of course! And I found Brownstone Diner and Pancake Factory in Jersey City, which is not far from Manhattan, but not somewhere I would ever venture to without a car. And they’re famouse for, guess what, pancakes! So there we were! And we found a parking spot which was a nice small pleasure back in the driving world and we listened to the radio as they played the same songs over and over. It was awesome.

When we got there, there was a huge long wait but as soon as we put our name in two seats at the bar opened up and the lady asked the waiting and starving crowd if anyone is interested and you betchya we were! I mean, I love sitting at the bar. You get to watch all the action happen, for one… and you get to eat! So we sat on bar stools and I ordered some crazy combo with pancakes, eggs, bacon, and sausage that cost ALL OF NINE DOLLARS! No wonder people live in New Jersey, because there is no way you could get all that for nine dollars in NYC. I couldn’t eat it all and I’m still not over it. Melissa had a ham and cheeseĀ  omelet, cause that’s what she does and we both had just stared and stared at the pancake list.

Now, I guess I’m a purist when it comes to pancakes because I was not interested in walnuts or peanut butter or any sort of fruit compte. I am interested in, however, chocolate chips, but only limited to one pancake and I am also interested in sprinkling sugar on top of my pancake and then squeezing lemon on it which is THE BEST THING IN THE WORLD. Thank you, grandma S, for teaching me that.

Pancakes in New Jersey is fun. And then we went to Target.

Welcome to Diners, Drive-Ins, and Drives! Okay, so that’s not my show, but it SHOULD be! Everyone is always astonished to learn that I don’t really watch any food shows on television, but one I really do like and would watch all the time is Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. And I should be the host. But the host is not me and I do not work in television so now you see this blog. So welcome to Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives on City Mitten! I love ’em all!

Today’s diner: Nip-n-Tuck in Berkley, Michigan is brought to you by Delta Airlines, the official sponsor of my dad’s early flight out of DTW, for which my older sister and I were responsible for driving him. This is why we ended up at Nip-n-Tuck on a Saturday before 8 a.m. Indeed.

I’m not sure if you can see those prices, but my sister and I got enough food for four and our bill was under ten dollars. Ten dollars! For two people! What is this, Michigan? Yes. And I live in New York.

ANYWAY! I love Nip-n-Tuck, the woman is so nice and my homegirl Michelle loves Nip-n-Tuck and is a regular, which I would be too if I lived right there.

Here is my sister Emily, not thrilled to be up so early, but very thrilled to be eating pancakes with butter and syrup! Another great thing about Nip-n-Tuck is that it is covered in Detroit Tiger’s paraphernalia. Gotta love a little Detroit love.

What do you do when you take a Friday off of work and you need to go somewhere for breakfast to prepare you for a day’s worth of shopping in Soho? Balthazar, of course!

Balthazar is known for its pastries and its fanciness. Or at least that’s what it’s known for to me. It’s classic and it’s classy and rich people go there. So we did too.

Nora had the eggs Norwegian with smoked salmon.

Miss Amanda Lynn had scrambled eggs in a puff pastry with mushrooms and asparagus. So that little pastry pit at the top was soooo flakey. And I thought that was the pastry until I started to peel away at the eggs and I realized my eggs were in a pastry boat! They say pastry puff, I say pastry boat! Well I couldn’t eat nearly a third of it because there was so much pastry but it truly was delicious. Perhaps the best scrambled eggs I’ve had in my life, and I used to be ob-sessed with the scrambled eggs at the Oakland Hills Country Club in Detroit. But these are good.

I like Balthazar and next time I need to get a chocolatey something something from their pastry shop/bakery next door.

Uh oh, we went to the Clinton St. Baking Company again! It is Pancake Month, afterall. Yesterday and today’s pancakes were with crunchy bananas with cinnamon chili chocolate sauce so naturally, that’s what we got.

Also, eggs benedict:

This time we didn’t have to wait for two hours, which was nice. We just walked right in. It’s nice the things you can do when you take a day off of work.

And… today’s my birthday! I’ve got some fun plans for today and I already got some cool things in the mail (panda skillet, what?) so it’s looking pretty good. Have a good weekend! :)

Look who finally went to the Clinton Street Baking Company! This girl! And MB!

This was my third attempt going to this overly popular, little pancake heaven. And third time is the charm. Usually when I go with people, (always on the weekends, cause we’re really smart) whomever I’m with takes one look at the line and jumps ship. I knew with yesterday being President’s Day and a lot of people off of work, we’d have the same kind of wait, but MB was a trooper and we waited together for… dun dun dun… just over two hours! Two hours for pancakes? These girls have got to be crazy. And we are. But so were the five billion other people standing in the cold.

We had lots to catch up on and found a bench across the street in the sun, so it wasn’t bad at all. And guess what, it was worth it. It is Pancake Month afterall.

First things first. MB ordered a coffee when we first sat down so I got myself a little hot chocolate:

It was realllly good. I fear it may be encroaching on the number one top spot in my book of hot chocolate in NY, which is currently The Adore. This had the perfect amount of cocoa and the perfect amount of sweet:

I will come back to the Clinton Street Baking Company just for this.

And now what we came for… the panacakes!

I mentioned it was Pancake Month, so Clinton Street had a different flavor every few days and yesterday’s was raspberry, chocolate chunk. Also, the syrup is fantastic. MB was singing its praises before we got our food and now I know exactly what she was talking about. It’s not as sticky as your run-of-the-mill maple syrup, and I’m not sure exactly what it is, but it’s really smooth. Like butter. So maybe it’s butter.

Because the pancakes are so, so sweet, we got some eggs so that we could split two orders:

Why is breakfast the best meal ever? We also got some sugar-cured bacon which was delish. And here are the pancakes after we gave them some love:

Perfect.

Also, if anyone has any interest in perhaps MB and I starring in a show on the Food Network or something, where we travel and eat foods from all over in search of the BEST, let us know. I mean, I know there’s a ton of shows like that already out there, but they don’t have us! :)
