I have been spending a lot of time in Michigan lately. I went back FOUR WEEKENDS in the past couple of a months. Normally I go back in the summer *maybe* once. But it’s been nice. So nice.

And these are disco fries from Main Street Diner and Dogs in Harrisville, Mi. They don’t have a website so I’m not linking to it. It’s a tiny little place right by the lake (Lake Huron) and I was there two weekends ago when they were having a parade. A parade! There was a fire truck and there was Ronald McDonald (seriously) and a girl in a crown sitting in the back of a car. Maybe some boy scouts. Clowns throwing candy. I watched this all from inside the restaurant, eating my disco fries. That were so good. My sister Emily and I weren’t getting them until the people next to us did and then we were like, “Yeah… we’re gonna need those.” And they were amazing. Loved the gravy. My uncle Marc was like, “You need to come up to Toronto, they put gravy on everything.” Well maybe I will!

And there is my Emily Boo.

Since the place is called “Diner and Dogs” OBVIOUSLY we were ordering some hot dogs. They had all kinds of fancy ones. I got a BLT dog that was wrapped in bacon with lettuce and tomato and Emily got a deep fried hot dog with baked beans.

And here’s the outside for you so you can get a complete visual:

Another little fun fact about this place is that the following weekend (aka this past weekend) I was driving by this street and I got pulled over by a cop. Yes. BUT he let me go – did you know if you have an out of state license they have to take it from you and staple it to the ticket because out of state people don’t pay their tickets? Yeah. So I was luuuucky because I would not have been able to get back to New York and I also wouldn’t have been able to go out after my friends’ wedding that I came into town for. So thank you, Mr. Officer. Also – my sister Emily got pulled over in the same car the very next day and she was not so lucky.

My mom’s favorite cheesecake is from Junior‘s and one time we stopped at the Brooklyn location – which is also a huge restaurant – and saw people eating at the bar and it looked pretty good. Not only that, but everyone had a little bowl of beets, cole slaw, and pickles. Mmm, mmm. So when she came back this weekend with my little sister, I decided at the bar we would eat.

This is a crabcake, which seems like an interesting choice to order at Junior’s but it was actually pretty good! My momma likes her crabcakes!

This is half of an order of goulash. Half, because my mom and I split it. I cannot imagine if we had not. I’m a sucker for any goulash, even goulash at a little (big) diner called Junior’s.

This is Alexandra with her really adventurous turkey sandwich. Look at all that meat!

And here is Alexandra in front of cupcakes and cheesecakes. She was a fan of the eyeballs on the cupcakes. Obviously we got a slice of cheesecake to go. And by that I mean we knew we were going to Times Square later and could pick up a slice at the other Junior’s location so we didn’t have to carry it around the whole time.

Welcome to Diners, Drive-Ins, and Drives! Okay, so that’s not my show, but it SHOULD be! Everyone is always astonished to learn that I don’t really watch any food shows on television, but one I really do like and would watch all the time is Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. And I should be the host. But the host is not me and I do not work in television so now you see this blog. So welcome to Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives on City Mitten! I love ’em all!

Today’s diner: Nip-n-Tuck in Berkley, Michigan is brought to you by Delta Airlines, the official sponsor of my dad’s early flight out of DTW, for which my older sister and I were responsible for driving him. This is why we ended up at Nip-n-Tuck on a Saturday before 8 a.m. Indeed.

I’m not sure if you can see those prices, but my sister and I got enough food for four and our bill was under ten dollars. Ten dollars! For two people! What is this, Michigan? Yes. And I live in New York.

ANYWAY! I love Nip-n-Tuck, the woman is so nice and my homegirl Michelle loves Nip-n-Tuck and is a regular, which I would be too if I lived right there.

Here is my sister Emily, not thrilled to be up so early, but very thrilled to be eating pancakes with butter and syrup! Another great thing about Nip-n-Tuck is that it is covered in Detroit Tiger’s paraphernalia. Gotta love a little Detroit love.

It’s been quite a week so I just wanted to end it with this picture of a piece of chocolate cake. I got it last weekend when I met up with my pal Melissa. We stopped at Big Daddy’s and this was my dinner. Yep. It was also the biggest piece of chocolate cake I’ve ever seen. I had some help and we still didn’t finish it. But alas. I’m feeling this picture right now.

So Happy Friday. I’m on my way to Detroit today and I’m excited to see some friends and some fam. It’s been a long time so it’s gonna be good.

What is the best burger in Detroit? Hard to say, but I can give you a few suggestions. One is Hunter House and their famous sliders. Delicious. This place is a neighborhood staple and despite the fact that they’ve changed from serving Coca Cola to Pepsi over the years, it’s one of my top three. So good.

I met up with my friend Paul who I used to work with – a few blocks away from Hunter House actually – at a theatre in high school. Working there was one of the best jobs I’ve ever had. It was so much fun and I still have tons of friends from there. Ok, maybe four isn’t “tons” but these people ended up being some of my best friends even seven or so years later. Palladium til we die!

Anyway, Hunter House is amazing. It’s cash only, like any true gem, and you order at the counter. There are signs all around the place for people who have eaten absurd amounts of double cheeseburgers and chili fries. But it’s that good. And I really like their pickles (see above).

When I was taking the pictures outside, a woman asked my friend Paul if Hunter House was famous. Um, hello, lady! Haha, I guess people in the D aren’t used to crazy girls walking around taking pictures of everything. Yet… :)
