So… I don’t really like to eat at chains when I’m on vacation (or ever really, with exceptions) but when there’s a regional doughnut chain… yeah, I go there.

Shipley’s! I didn’t know what to get, they were all so beautiful and bright. But I could only have one! So I picked. Devil’s Food. Yeah… go big or go home? Wasn’t really sure what I was in for, but hey.

Let’s take a look, shall we?

Chocolate doughnut: check. Glaze: check.

And then…

BAM, chocolate filling. Out of nowhere. It was very sweet and very good. But I do think I almost died. Also, please please ignore my chipped nailpolish, I have said before I hate hate pictures of my nails when they are chipped and you think I could have found 20 minutes before I went to Texas to remedy the situation but ALAS I did not.

Anyway, chocolate on the inside. Now you know.

It’s been awhile since I posted about the Brooklyn Flea, right? And this time I got (mostly) all new things. So here goes. Above is beets, tomatoes, cucumbers and feta. Probably one of my top five combinations in life. You also could have gotten watermelon and feta which my mom thought was weird but I bet it would have been delicious.

NEXT UP: Porchetta

I mean, it’s not much to look at maybe but I think it’s delicious. I’m a big fan of Porchetta. Those people know what’s up.

Followed by, DOUGH:

These doughnuts are from DOUGH in Bed-Stuy and I’ve got to say they were practically sold out by the time we got there. So if you go to the Brooklyn Flea and that’s what you want, you better make a beeline to their stand. Dulce de leche with almonds next to blood orange. Oh yeah. We went with the dulce de leche which was good. And the doughnut was so doughy and fluffy. I need to get me to their store front in Bed-Stuy immediately.

Well, hey there. Busting out the big guns today. Maple and bacon doughnut at Northern Spy Food Co. I know my mom and my sister in Michigan might see that and think, “Ew, gross” but let me be the one to educate you. Savory and sweet together can sometimes be amazing. If you’ve never tried chocolate covered bacon, you should. It’s the same idea here and this maple bacon doughnut was a-mazing.

I went to Northern Spy Food Co for brunch with my homegirl Melissa this weekend. Once we were both there we didn’t have to wait at ALL which was awesome and unusual for a Saturday brunch in the East Village. I will be back.

Melissa had a Cucumber Mint Cooler (Gruner Veltliner, cucumber, mint, lime) and I had a watermelon and basil mimosa.

For eats, Melissa had eggs and polenta:

Kind of looks like a smiley face to me. Also, I like polenta.

It’s my MOM! Hi, Mom! The Doughnut Plant is her favorite.

It astonishes me when I hear people who have lived in the city for 4+ years and have never been to The Doughnut Plant. Even people who’ve lived here for 4 days, really. What are you waiting for? I am constantly shocked by who has not been there yet. And with their new location on 23rd st, you really have no excuse. Of course, however, we always go to the original location on Grand Street. There used to be this big guy who worked there with lots of personality, but now it appears they’ve hired hipster replacements with zero personality instead, but we’ll still take it.

This is the only picture of us three from the entire weekend. And it was taken at The Doughnut Plant. Of course.

For those wondering, that is a strawberry lemonade in my mom’s hand and for those who like strawberry more than you like lemon (aka, me) that means you will like it a lot.

Although they have lots of fun flavors, we get the same thing every time: chocolate black out and creme brulee. My, my.

If you’re a Michigan State Spartan, as I am, The Breslin means something very specific to you: basketball. But in New York City, it’s a newish restaurant in the Ace Hotel that everyone has been talking about. And so we meet the lamb burger.

Above is Nora who came to town for New Year’s Eve. We started with a seafood sausage which is whaaat seafood made into sausage. I don’t even remember all the seafood involved, definitely some lobster but it was phe-nom-e-nal. You must try it. Sounds strange, yes, but SO GOOD.

And here is the lamb burger which is so good it is now tied for favorite burger ever with The Spotted Pig. This burger is lamb (duh) and there’s a block of feta on it which is AWESOME. I always order my burgers plain, no cheese, but feta is the exception as feta can do no wrong. So there’s that.

For dessert we had the doughnuts which were warm and covered in sugar. The sauces were sea salt caramel (I think), maple, and something cranberry. The caramel was the best, naturally. While eating this I thought I really need to take my mom there.

So The Breslin is cute, it’s kind of decorated like the Spotted Pig now that I think about it. But the Ace Hotel is trendy, trendy and there’s usually a wait, ours was only 20 minutes on a Thursday night – so not too bad.

So yes, I would definitely recommend The Breslin to anyone – Spartan or not.

Also, a sidenote – I think it’s funny when people complain about limited menus. The Breslin doesn’t have a lot of entree options but I personally think that’s one of it’s strengths. What’s wrong with just focusing on some really great dishes and who needs a thousand choices anyway? So I dig it.

Another sidenote – my rent just went up crazy huge this week (16%!) so yay for that! I may have to resort to eating cereal for dinner a few nights a week because I am not ready to move out yet. Moving sucks! Am I right or am I right?

This is Michelle. She flew into NYC for the weekend to visit and I made her play model for me. As you can see, she got a little bored. We went to my friend’s Gossip Girl-themed birthday party on the LES Saturday night and she wore a dress from the Anna Sui for Target collection, which was inspired by the show. Yeah, girl.

One of our first stops for the weekend was the Doughnut Plant.

Um, yeah. If you’ve never been here, you don’t know what you’re missing. I mean, it’s not just doughnuts, it’s a way of life.

I made her get the blackout doughnut and a creme brulee doughnut which is exactly what I got too. At first she wasn’t convinced, but after her first bite, there were no complaints. She couldn’t believe how good they were either. Of course there are more options (tres leches for one) but the blackout and creme brulees are too good for me to pass up for anything else.

The blackout is a cake doughnut but to me, it’s really just cake. It’s so chocolatey: chocolate crumbs on the top and gooey chocolate in the middle. It’s hard to describe but basically, you should get one now. A word to the wise: The Doughnut Plant is closed Mondays. I learned that one the hard way.

And the creme brulee:

Another not-your-average doughnut. It may be small on size but it is huge on taste. My mom’s favorite dessert is creme brulee so she absolutely loves these doughnuts.

After the Doughnut Plant, we somehow found ourselves in the middle of the San Gennaro Festival.
