Hello, bloody Mary in Brooklyn with Missy!

Can I just say that I LOVED my apartment last year because I had a HUGE room that looked over Prospect Park, but I am loving my new apartment a little bit more because I have the option to walk to five billion different places for brunch? I mean, that’s not the only reason, but it’s huge. And my bedroom is still overlooking trees. Brooklyn! Love you. Ha.

So, Colonie on Atlantic Ave. I’ve been once before for dinner and it was very good, and I decided it was time to try for brunch. The menus are a little short, but there’s still enough options for me.

These are the pancakes. Not my favorite presentation, it looks like a quesadilla. But I did dig the raspberry preserve!

This is the leek and gruyere scramble which was a solid choice. Also I feel like I’ve had some very dry potatoes lately and these ones were perfecto.

Also perfecto:

Biscuits! A little butter and raspberry preserve, you’re good to go. Biscuits are just good, people.

So I do really like Colonie. It’s a cool space, too. And we went around 1 or so on Saturday and didn’t even have to wait. And I had a Bellini. The way brunch should be!

Well, hey there. Busting out the big guns today. Maple and bacon doughnut at Northern Spy Food Co. I know my mom and my sister in Michigan might see that and think, “Ew, gross” but let me be the one to educate you. Savory and sweet together can sometimes be amazing. If you’ve never tried chocolate covered bacon, you should. It’s the same idea here and this maple bacon doughnut was a-mazing.

I went to Northern Spy Food Co for brunch with my homegirl Melissa this weekend. Once we were both there we didn’t have to wait at ALL which was awesome and unusual for a Saturday brunch in the East Village. I will be back.

Melissa had a Cucumber Mint Cooler (Gruner Veltliner, cucumber, mint, lime) and I had a watermelon and basil mimosa.

For eats, Melissa had eggs and polenta:

Kind of looks like a smiley face to me. Also, I like polenta.

Who loves brunchy beverages? I do, I do. This is actually from a few weeks back, when Hagan and I went on an adventure in the rain to Char No. 4. I underestimated how long it would take us to walk there from my apartment in the pouring rain. Sunshine – no problem. But when it’s raining and you live a few flights up and by the time you’re downstairs you realize you don’t have an umbrella and you’re like “screw it” and decide to walk there anyway? Not as fun. Hagan was soaking wet and the dude asked him if he could grab him a towel from the bar for his hair. Ha!

Anyway – there were brunchy beverages. I don’t do the whole Bloody Mary thing but Hagan does and he likes them spicy and he gave Char No. 4 a “good to go” in case you’re into Bloody Marys too.

See. And now the foodz:

House smoked bacon, one of Hagan’s favorite things. Followed by his actual favorite thing:

Crispy cheddar curds. Yep, that happened. Yummy.

And then you know, the usual stuff:

Yeah… what isn’t on this plate? I stole some potatoes, natch, and they were so good.

And then me:

This was a brunch special that day. I believe it was corned beef hash. The sauce underneath it definitely had a kick to it. I think I keep forgetting what “hash” means because this is the second time I’ve ordered hash and it wasn’t what I expected. So maybe I don’t know what hash is. Basically there was this hash once at the Roebling Tea Room like two years ago (seriously) that had potatoes and beets and an egg on top and I keep looking for it and that was not it. Not sure why I thought corned beef would do the trick but that’s what happens when you’re a whackadoodle like me.

ANYWAY. I very much liked Char No. 4 and would like to go back – whether it’s for brunch or I’d also like to try their dinner.

Who loves brunch? Me, me, me! I’ve actually seen Twitter bios where people say “I don’t like brunch.” Sad for you! I mean… NYC brunch can be cray cray and sometimes you have to wait 3.5 hours but when brunch is good, it is good. And it was good at Bakin’ & Eggs in Chicago! So good.

We have the roasted veggie frittata for Miss KMD. And a little chicken apple sausage is hiding. Here whole plate was so good and I know because I hate half of it. What I ordered was a bit too much like a dessert to have for breakfast (imagine me saying that) and soon you will see.

This is Nora’s Southern Comfort Bowl. Yep. What it’s called. Two eggs (overeasy here) with potatoes, cheddar, biscuit and gravy. Southern Comfort indeed. What you see behind it creepin’ is called a flight of bacon.

So we’ve got a few different kinds of bacon here. Maple pepper, jalapeno, honey, mesquite, and cherry smoked. Actually not entirely sure which ones I tried but I did steer away from the jalapeno. I was expecting the bacon to be that really thick kind like applewood smoked bacon, but I’m actually glad it wasn’t cause the thin kind is what I actually prefer.

And then my dessert for breakfast:

Remember when I wondered aloud to myself (and whoever reads this) about bread pudding turned into french toast? Well now I know because that’s what this is. I’m pretty sure there were chocolate chips in it too. It was delicious, but five bites or so goes a long way. Which is why I ate half of Kayti’s instead. We took the lovely french toast (what it’s actually called) home and I hope Nora ate the crap out of it later.

And if you’re wondering if they know how to make their lattes pretty at Bakin’ & Eggs the answer is YES.

Bakin’ & Eggs is GOOD STUFF, people. Would be my new go-to brunch location if it were not in Chicago. Chicago, I do love you!

As you can see, we are definitely back to our regular programming. I had the pleasure last week of going to The Vanderbilt with my friend Mara, who happens to be one of the awesomest people in my life. The Vanderbilt is in Prospect Heights and since I’m moving out of Lefferts Gardens in four seconds, it seemed like time to finally try something in the neighborhood next door. So Vanderbilt we went.

The Vanderbilt had a special St. Patty’s prix-fixe menu, so we ordered one of those and then we ordered some other stuff to go with it. This was the crispy fried egg with blood sausage and potato hash. Do you see that? They fried the ENTIRE EGG. That was awesome. Pretty much any dish with an egg on top of it is awesome.

We even had TWO dishes with eggs in them. Because we *want* to die. To the left, we’ve got some lamb (delicious), and to the right we have slow poached pasture raised egg with spaetzle and bacon. MOM ARE YOU READING THIS? My mom luuuuvs spaetzle and now we must add The Vanderbilt to our list of restaurants to eat at if they keep this dish. It was the Bomb with a capitol B.

Other things that were Bomb: dessert! Poor Mara, she doesn’t even like dessert and I keep making her try things with me.

Since it was around St. Pat’s, Mara’s dessert was soda bread with stout ice cream. Interesting! Mara wasn’t upset I had her get dessert anymore.

I had the pumpkin toffee cake.

Yep. I don’t even care about pumpkin or toffee but the couple next to us had their dessert and were diving right in quite nicely and so I stared at them and the girl told me I pretty much had to get it because it is fabulous. And it was! She was right. Phew. So get this. Our server sold me on it too, he was great. Vanderbilt was GREAT, PEOPLE. Go eat there.

After The Vanderbilt we hopped across the street to Weather Up for a quick drink and that place is cuuuute. See, I just planned the perfect Prospect Heights date for you. You’re welcome.

And now we have reached the point in this post where I digress and tell you how horrible I am at packing up my room for my move on Thursday. Yep, I’m moving on Thursday. Still in Brooklyn and still awesome, don’t you worry but I am getting the hex outta here. I’ve got half empty boxes all over my bedroom floor and clothes and random things of whatever like everywhere. It’s not looking good.

You know when you see a face and it just makes you smile? Well this is my love letter to you, Kelly Purkey, because when I was just going through my pictures and came to this one that is what happened to me. Love this girl.

Saturday we had a date day that started with brunch at Freemans, followed by some scrapbook action, followed by nap time, followed by Shake Shack in Times Square and then Blue Valentine. As you can imagine, we ended on a high note with that movie. A high, depressing note that makes us reevaluate what kind of relationships we want to be in (if any). Outside of each other, I mean. ;)

This is the fall vegetable hash. I love hash for brunch. Some veggies, some potato, and some egg. Mmm mmm mm. And did I know that I was into brussels sprouts? No, but now I do. So that was fab. And it was only $10 making it officially the cheapest brunch I’ve ever had with Kelly Purkey, except for the one time it was free (we got the hookup sometimes, we do).

And here is KP again. You may think she’s thinking, “What the what?” but she actually knows exactly what’s going on here.

Another fun fact: I love Freemans and the only other time I’ve been was for dinner on a then-very-promising first date. Oh, how we (re: me) get excited about things and they crumble so fast. Ah well. Thought that would be an interesting fun fact for you. So Freemans is good for any date, but they’re especially good for dates with Kelly Purkey.

Welcome to Diners, Drive-Ins, and Drives! Okay, so that’s not my show, but it SHOULD be! Everyone is always astonished to learn that I don’t really watch any food shows on television, but one I really do like and would watch all the time is Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. And I should be the host. But the host is not me and I do not work in television so now you see this blog. So welcome to Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives on City Mitten! I love ’em all!

Today’s diner: Nip-n-Tuck in Berkley, Michigan is brought to you by Delta Airlines, the official sponsor of my dad’s early flight out of DTW, for which my older sister and I were responsible for driving him. This is why we ended up at Nip-n-Tuck on a Saturday before 8 a.m. Indeed.

I’m not sure if you can see those prices, but my sister and I got enough food for four and our bill was under ten dollars. Ten dollars! For two people! What is this, Michigan? Yes. And I live in New York.

ANYWAY! I love Nip-n-Tuck, the woman is so nice and my homegirl Michelle loves Nip-n-Tuck and is a regular, which I would be too if I lived right there.

Here is my sister Emily, not thrilled to be up so early, but very thrilled to be eating pancakes with butter and syrup! Another great thing about Nip-n-Tuck is that it is covered in Detroit Tiger’s paraphernalia. Gotta love a little Detroit love.
