It’s fancy time!

JUST KIDDING. Obviously my university does not sponsor this blog but after the glorious win against the Michigan Wolverines this past weekend, I just have to say something. I have lots of friends that went to Michigan and most of them are great, and we’re playful about the rivalry and it’s all in good fun. But some are just nasty and I’m hoping since now we’ve beat them in football four years in a row I won’t hear a peep for awhile. Have some respect! Go green!

AND back to the topic at hand- gettin fancy!

I had seen a list of “top lobster rolls” in the country and was surprised to see a restaurant from Texas listed. So I did a little research on this place, Perla’s in Austin and decided that while in Texas, I had to go there. And also my friend Stacy had suggested we go there as well, from the positive things she had heard about the restaurant as well. So by the time I finally made it there, I had built it up pretty big in my head.

AND IT DID NOT DISAPPOINT.

Oysters, as you do. Some East Coast and some West Coast but I can’t remember for the life of me what they were besides absolutely delicious. I told the server which kinds I typically go for and he was a huge help and his suggestions were spot on.

And then you wait for the good stuff:

I have had a lot of lobster rolls in my life and dare I say *gasp* this may be the best one I’ve ever had! PERFECT. And the fries were good and we also had brussels sprouts and asparagus and my dad also loved his lobster roll and Stacy really liked her fish. So basically if you go to Austin I highly, highly recommend eating here and I highly, highly recommend getting the lobster roll. When I return, I hope to eat here again. Because it was so good! My dad and I talked about it for days. DAYS afterward.

And the place is really cute, too.

Ahhhh thinking about this again is making me think about going back to Texas immediately! Who is coming?

Well hello there, ladies and gents. This week I had the honor of trying out Flex Mussels on 13th street for my first time with The Oyster Blog and two other ladies. They’ve got a happy hour deal that’s unlimited mussels, fries, and a draft beer for $20. It’s only available at the bar, but we have a hook up so we got to take advantage of the deal at the table. Fancy! They have tons and tons of different kinds of mussels, but for the happy hour deal, you only get to pick between three: classic, dijon, or fra diavolo. I think the four of us were unanimous in dijon as the favorite.

Looking over the list of other mussels, though – I need to go back and get the maine mussels with lobster, smoked bacon, corn, white chowder and parsley. Yeah, that’s got my name written all over it.

Also, I had a blueberry wheat beer. Actually, two. They were delicious. Happy Thursday.

Hello. I am obsessed with this glassware. Sadly, these glasses not available for purchase on the interwebs. And I need them in my kitchen. Sheep Station, if I were you, I’d keep a close eye on those pint glasses of yours…

And now, it is story time.

I went to Sheep Station last week with my homegirl Jordan (basically the only person I’m talking about lately, I promise you I do have other friends) and her friend Kelly who was in town. One of the first things we noticed when we went inside was a giant stroller just hanging out. No biggie. I’ve seen strollers before. We sat down at a table and next to us was a group of about 4-5 adults with three kids, all age 2 or under. No biggie. We talk to our server, order our food, everything comes out. Normal dinner. We’re in the middle of an interesting conversation and all of a sudden we hear an “AHHHHHHHHHH!” coming from the 2-year old’s mouth about four feet away from us. I look over and jokingly send a dirty look in that direction (I mean, you can’t really give a 2-year-old a dirty look) and then us girls laugh to ourselves and think, “Wow, that baby is crazy.”

60 seconds later. “AHHHHHHHHHHH!” This kid is screaming at the top of his/her lungs. Again our conversation comes to a halt. The baby does not stop. The mom and dad keep saying to it things along the lines of, “You can’t do that Name of Baby. You’re distracting those around you Name of Baby.” Name of Baby does not care. Keeps yelling and yelling. By this point us three are bewildered that one of the parents has not taken the child outside to calm him/her down. They’re just sitting there ignoring its screams. I mean, I’m all down for ignoring kids when they’re acting up, but when you’re out in public, such as in a restaurant, you’ve got to do something. I’m sure it’s embarrassing for you, but take the dang kid outside. So the kid is still yelling. Also, mind you – the family has paid their bill. WHAT are they doing there? Anyway, staff comes over to talk to them two times and finally the OWNER comes out and tells them that they understand the baby is a baby but they have a full dining room right now and it’s distracting for everyone trying to enjoy their meals and would you please do something? Mom’s response is as follows: “She’s two, what do you want me to do?” OH REALLY? The owner then asks them to leave.

SNAP!

I mean it’s the same thing if you’re in a crowded movie theatre or church, you take the kid outside and calm him/her down and then you bring the baby back in. Hello!

So once they finally left (while taking their sweet time and passive-aggressively telling Name of Baby quite loudly that she really needs to calm down because they’re getting kicked out of the restaurant now) the owner came over and apologized to us (we were the table closest to the baby, FYI) and we all commiserated together about what just went down and laughed it all off as we were all on Team No More Baby Yelling. I jappreciated that they did something, ya know?

So that’s my story about Sheep Station and why I love it. Besides the food. Also I don’t mean to sound anti-baby or anything because the fact is I actually do like kids! They are cute! I make faces to them all the time on the train. It’s just that I just like to be able to have a conversation with my friends at a restaurant, too. So please do not be offended if you are a parent of a child, I have more respect for you then you will ever know and I hope to one day join the ranks and get kicked out of a restaurant myself when the kid is acting up.

Roasted oysters (with smoked bacon and leeks) are fun. At Brooklyn Fish Camp with my girl Jordan. Since there’s a post for you today you can safely assume I’ve been procrastinating like nobody’s business on the whole packing thing.

Pan fried cod sandwich and Jordan eating french fries. Who doesn’t love french fries? Jordan goes to Brooklyn Fish Camp a bit and she says the po’ boys are fantastic and I am also interested in trying the lobster roll. Brooklyn Fish Camp is cute. I like it. They were also nice enough to not make a big deal about the giant stack of oversize boxes I had along with me (did I mention I’m moving?! It’s the worst!). A dude asked me on my way out if I was going to make a fort. I wish!

Sharing is caring! And so it was, that I was lucky enough to spend my birthday in Negril, Jamaica, and my birthday dinner at Rockhouse.

One thing cool about many restaurants/hotels in Jamaica is that they will hire a cab or have their own car service bring you there for free. Can you IMAGINE if that were the case in Manhattan? So that was awesome. We took advantage and went to Rockhouse for my birthday dinner. It was raining on and off so unfortunately we weren’t able to sit outside but everything else was perfect.

Say hello to the seafood platter that I split with Nora (after some appetizers, of course!) It included lobster, coconut shrimp, and blackened mahi mahi. Sidenote – I hate when restaurants use the word “platter.” It sounds so unrefined to be like, “Yes, may I please have the seafood PLATTER?” Just gross. But name aside, my seafood combination was fantastic. I’m glad I was able to have some good lobster in Jamaica, since, I don’t know, they catch it right there on the beach, and the mahi mahi was fantabulous as well.

This was Kayti’s rock pot: broth with fresh seafood. But as you can see I’m focusing on the bread. That bread! So think and soft and can you just IMAGINE having it for french toast? So the bread was fabulous for dipping. Oh, somehow I did not get a picture of Andrea’s plate, but she had the snapper, which was a huge thing because Andrea is a strict vegetarian! I appreciated her trying some seafood since we were in JAMAICA and because initially I thought her being a vegetarian might be a bit of a “thing” in Jamaica and she wouldn’t have many options at meals. Well, it turned out to be no big deal at all and she turned out to eat seafood one time, which was fun.

Did I mention this was for my birthday? They sang for me, which was awesome. And us girlies split two desserts and they put a candle in mine.

This dessert was billed to us as “chocolate pudding” but “chocolate pudding” it was not! It was like pudding brownie or something and it was GREAT. ORDER THIS.

And also order this:

Have you ever had coconut creme brulee? Probably not. I am neither a coconut nor creme brulee person but it was pretty fab and my girls who are both coconut and creme brulee basically thought it was the best thing ever. So check it out.

Also, if you’re wondering what Rockhouse looks like during the day:

Uh, yeah. I realize this post is extremely photo-heavy, but this was Jamaica, dang it. So basically Rockhouse is beautiful since it’s on the cliffs. We actually considered staying here and I’m glad we didn’t, just because it seems like much more of a romantic getaway kind of place instead of a four girls want to hang at the beach kind of place. But I am glad we chose Rockhouse for my birthday dinner and I’m glad we went back to see it during the day.

Hello, crab! So the one eating-out adventure we went on in Myrtle Beach was at the lovely, the glorious Giant Crab:

I told you Myrtle Beach was a different world. Driving down whatever road it is we drive down, all you see are countless seafood buffets, each with a different theme or gimmick or what have you. Insanity. And of course we had to try it.

This is Benny Boy, very excited after taking his first trip to the buffet. Let’s discuss the buffet, shall we? I am not posting pictures of it. Except the crab-handler at the top. Just imagine every sort of fish or seafood or whatever and imagine it fried. Twice. Okay, maybe not twice, but still, it was all a little shocking. Definitely don’t see too much of that in NYC. We fry things here, occasionally, but you never feel like your stepping into the heaping sauna of the fryer itself.

Anyway, all the fried fish you could ever want is found at Giant Crab. And also fried chicken. Or how about some ribs? Prime rib, you say? They got that too. Maybe some pizza or a hot dog? I told you it was insane. I had one plate of a little fried goodness and then went for a salad before digging in on some crab legs:

Crab legs are fun to eat because you have to crack them and then pull them apart and then your hands get really messy. I hope to do it again soon.

Also found at the Giant Crab was the largest selection of desserts. Every single kind of cake (except funfetti, which I probably would have fainted had I saw), all kinds of cookies, brownies, puddings… whatever. I felt like I was in the dorms, except not as good. The caf at MSU was the bomb. Anyway, the next time I go to Myrtle Beach, I want to go to some hole in the walls – like this BBQ place next to a gas station that we kept driving by. But now I’ve been to the Giant Crab. Sorry I didn’t get you a t-shirt. ;)

I love The Mermaid Inn. Full disclosure: I am doing some work for them. You may see some of these photos elsewhere on the interwebs eventually (not the ones of me and P though, of course). I loved the Mermaid even before working for them (obviously, or I wouldn’t want to work for them), but I still thought you should know.

Baby Grand Platter! Can I get this every single time I come to the Mermaid, please? It’s the perfect combination of oysters, clams, and lobster knuckles. Let’s have a closer look, shall we? Oysters and clams:

If you’ve never tried an oyster because you can’t get over the “texture” or something, you need to get over it and try one IMMEDIATELY. They are delicious and so refreshing and now that I work for the Mermaid, they are on the brain 24/7. I’m surprised they haven’t shown up in my dreams yet.

Another thing you should know: lobster knuckles are the easiest thing to eat!

Whoever came up with the idea of serving lobster this way is a genius. Already cracked open for you, you just have to pull them apart a little bit and there’s your lovely lobster. My goodness.

For our entrees, we ordered different things so we could sample eachother’s.

Whole roasted Idaho brook trout for P. Don’t let the eyes creep you out. P lost one on the table for a little bit, haha.

And lobster sandwich for me. Um, there’s no such thing as too much lobster. And have you ever had Old Bay fries? Cause they are awesome. The more you know…

Lovely, lovely. Love The Mermaid. And if you haven’t been in one of the THREE Manhattan locations, you pretty much have no excuse now that you’ve seen the goods. And I work there. :)
